In Genesis, Cain and Abel, the first sons of Adam and Eve, each made offerings to God: Cain offered crops, while Abel offered the best of his flock. God favored Abel's offering, making Cain angry and jealous. Cain lured Abel into the field and attacked him, killing him. When God asked, "Where is your brother Abel?" Cain replied, "I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?" As punishment, God cursed Cain to be a wanderer but marked him for protection.
